Angelina Jolie takes on the role of Maria Callas, the legendary opera singer who defined an era in the 20th century
Maria Callas stands out as one of the most celebrated opera singers of her era. Her life was a tapestry of opulence intertwined with challenges, including a tumultuous relationship with her mother, scandals that earned her the diva label, and a clandestine romance with one of the wealthiest men on the planet. In the twilight of her life, Maria stepped back from the limelight, opting for solitude in the enchanting city of Paris. On September 16, 1977, Maria passed away from a heart attack in her Paris apartment, leaving behind a legacy at the age of 53.
Angelina makes her much-anticipated return to the big screen after a brief hiatus from Hollywood. Her most recent role was in the 2021 Marvel superhero film Eternals. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Angelina expressed her deep connection to Maria’s life.
“I’m confident that many will notice the similarities we share as women, yet what may not be immediately apparent is the discomfort we both experienced in the spotlight,” Angelina remarked. “The work we undertake carries a weight that can diminish the joy of the journey.” The joy of creation captivates me, much like Maria’s passion for singing; however, there are moments when certain elements disrupt the flow and complicate the experience. Maria has faced significant challenges. She faced harsh treatment from others when she fell short of their expectations. They acted unjustly, leaving her to bear the weight of that trauma. She puts in a tremendous amount of effort. <text”I genuinely care for her, and I want that chapter of her story to be beautifully conveyed.”
